About Malcom Locke malcom head

Malcom has correct, balanced, uphill, sport-horse build. Malcom has the unflappable "what me worry" attitude that makes Fjords so easy to work with, while still maintaining a good work ethic. He is calm, not lazy.
Malcom is a son of Gjest, one of the most well known stallions in North America. Good conformation plus good temperment results in a horse capable of the performance you want. At his previous home Malcom had been ridden only a little and never shown. We are now starting him in dressage and the results are impressive. When Sarah first started riding him about a year ago now, he was so rusty that straight lines and 20 meter circles were a challenge, and his under saddle canter was non-existant. Now he knows his canter leads and we are working on containing his very exhuberant canter. At the trot he can do 20 or 10 meter circles, or spiral from one to another, or do a 6 loop serpentine. He has a beautiful extended trot. He has good self carriage, is naturally on the bit and learns quickly. We have also discovered that Malcom loves to go out on a trail ride. His ground covering "tiger walk" and "let's go see that" attitude make trail riding fun and gives us a break from arena work.

Malcom's tenuous youth

Malcom was born in Nova Scotia at Beaver Dam Farm. He is one of several of the Gjest x Stine cross which has produced consistently high quality horses. As a very young colt he received a life threatening injury. For the whole story of how he was saved read this article [click here] for which we thank Carol Rivoire and the Fjord Herald for permission to reprint here.

Due to his injury it was unknown if he would be a performance horse or even sound enough to breed, but the Rivoires took the chance. When Malcolm was 2 he was purchased by Jon and Nancy Roemer of Star Sky Farms in Ohio. He was eventually trained to be ridden, but was never shown.

When the Roemers decided to retire from the breeding business and concentrate on driving their remaining Malcom offspring, they believed that Malcom deserved a home where he could continue to have an opportunity to produce the high quality offspring that he has become known for. Meanwhile Sarah was just getting a Fjord breeding program started and had been looking for a horse of the Gjest line.

That is how BDF Malcom Locke, born in Nova Scotia is now in sunny southern California. We don’t think he misses the seasons. On thanksgiving day he enjoyed a roll in the warm sand of the dressage arena.

Malcom has a very kind, generous and calm temperament which is a tribute both to his Fjord ancestry and to the correct training he has received at his 2 previous homes. He has a ground covering walk, a smooth energetic trot and a very correct and lovely canter. He has the nice uphill build which leads to self carriage. And he has a beautiful face with a kind eye. All these characteristics are consistently passed on to his offspring. People who have driven or ridden one of his offspring have commented to me that they carry themselves and it makes them easier to train than some Fjords who are heavy on the forehand.
